Description
An account of the resource
A manuscript minute book for the administration of the Stanwix Trust in Thurles Co. Tipperary. The committee administered the trust set up by Emma Stanwix, an absentee landlord who died in France in 1857, to build and run a hospital and alms-houses for poor old widows from the revenue of the Stanwix estate in Moycarkey Co. Tipperary. The alms houses are known locally as 'the Widows Homes' and were officially titled 'The Stanwix Hospital and Alms-houses'. The houses are red brick Arts and Crafts style, and they were built in 1889, to a design by Albert E. Murray. In all 18 houses were erected. The trust was dissolved in 2020 and the houses were taken over and refurbished by Thurles Lions Trust Housing Association. The refurbished homes were officially opened in May 2023. The minute book covers the period 1890 - 1930. Thurles, Co. Tipperary.
