Description

Black and white image of the ruined Holycross Abbey. This was a Cistercian Monastery in Thurles founded in 1169 by King Donal O'Brien of Thomond. It became a place of pilgrimage in medieval times. The abbey fell into ruin following the Cromwellian conquest and was restored in the 1970s. It serves as the parish church for Holycross since 1975. Mid 20th Century
